One of the advantages of Birmingham Anxiety & Trauma Therapy is the number of therapists available to choose from. We have 19 licensed psychologists, social workers, professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists – all who have a unique approach to treating anxiety. Having said that, there are some similarities in our therapists’ treatment of anxiety as well.
The Intake Process
The first thing that will happen when you come to us for the treatment of anxiety is a thorough intake process. Our Solutions Advocate office staff will provide an email link to a questionnaire for you to complete that will enable us to get some vital information about your background and current circumstances.
The First Therapy Session
During the first session, they may ask you additional questions about your answers. We don’t ever want to make assumptions about you! After that, you and your counselor together will make some decisions about the specific goals you wish to achieve during your time in therapy. Our goal is to provide you with direction and an expectation about how therapy will proceed by the end of the first session.
How We Approach Anxiety Therapy
Some of the therapeutic approaches to anxiety our therapists use include:
- Addressing aspects of a well-balanced life that may be contributing to your anxiety and help ease your stress level fairly quickly, such as slight changes to your diet, drinking more water, and breathing exercises that will work very quickly to bring down your stress level.
- Examining the influence of your environment on your current stress levels and how your expectations differ from what actually happens in your environment.
- Becoming aware of the onset of an anxious episode earlier and learning to approach your anxious feelings in a way that will help you determine what to address more accurately so that your anxiety lessens.
- Looking at your anxiety from a variety of angles, giving you and your therapist more clarity about what techniques to use to address your stress.
- Identifying what is happening in your body and your thoughts before the onset of anxiety, during anxiety, and following anxiety.
- Identifying what is at the root of your anxiety and working with that part of you to identify the missing pieces and satisfy the unmet needs that brought about the anxious feelings.
These are just a few of the ways we can help you decrease your anxious feelings. We know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you and your therapist together can develop a plan that is unique to you to reduce your anxiety and help you move to a better quality of life.
